Help Save the Building

The Mountain View has stood in Oracle since 1895. Your gift helps keep it standing and gets the Neals’ story on the record.

Read what he says

“Hi, I’m Garry Davis. I own the Mountain View Hotel in Oracle, Arizona. I bought this building in 2022 with the best of intentions. I wanted to restore it and draw attention to the amazing story of the couple who built it, William “Curly” Neal and Annie Box.

I’m 75 years old, and my health has been deteriorating since the day I bought the place. In the past year, I’ve been confined to a wheelchair. I’m going to be honest: I am no longer able to carry this forward on my own. If someone doesn’t step in to help, I’ll be forced to sell the property, along with the Mountain View, to the highest bidder. I’ll have no control over who that might be. There are other buildings on the property. Whoever buys the place may see the hotel as a liability and tear it down.

I’ve reached out to quite a few organizations that I thought might be able to help. I’ve met some very nice people with good intentions, but the ball has always been in my court, and my health has kept me from following through.

One thing I wish to make very clear: my daughter and I own the property outright. We intend to gift the hotel, along with the church annex, to the appropriate organization. We picture the hotel as a museum and the church repurposed as Oracle’s first town hall. We’re not looking to make any money. We just need help with the zoning and other legal work.

In the meantime, the hotel urgently needs protection from the elements. Parts of the front of the building are completely exposed and get more damage every time it rains. If nothing is done, eventually the entire wall will collapse. That’s why I’m making a desperate plea for help.

This hotel has stood since 1895. Annie ran it for decades. Buffalo Bill was a guest here. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Time is of the essence. If you can help, with a gift of any size or just by sharing this with someone who can, please do it today. Click the button below this video. Thank you.”

We are working toward 501(c)(3) status. Until then, gifts are not tax-deductible.

What your gift pays for

  • Stabilize the building. Keeping a building of this age upright is ongoing, unglamorous work: roof, walls, foundation, weather.
  • Digitize the archive. Photographs, deeds and clippings, scanned, captioned and published one at a time, with sources attached.
  • Tell the story. A documentary film and a written history, both built from primary sources.
  • Teach it. An animated series for children, so the next generation hears these names early.
